The majestic humpback whale

We were sorry to leave Whitehaven beach. But in the late afternoon we took the launch boat back to the Mantaray for the journey home to Airlie Beach.

Our skipper, Splash, said he couldn’t make any promises but there was a chance we could spot a whale or two on the way home. We were to keep our eyes scanning the water, looking for any sign of one.

And we weren’t disappointed. About twenty minutes from home we saw the tell-tale water spurt, and Splash sent the boat in the direction of the whale. Sometimes the Humpback whale makes just a fleeting trip to the surface for air. But for us it was a fifteen minute acrobatic display! There was breach after breach – perhaps a dozen in total – as well as fin-waving and tail-flipping. Had this one escaped from the water park ?

What a treat. People spend a whole day aboard a boat just for the chance of seeing such a spectacle. We got it for free on the way home from a great day on the beach.

wow…these pictures are amazing!!! Every time I saw this I never had my camera or I just wasn’t quick enough, but it was definately one of the most spectacular things I have ever seen! Glad to see you are continuing to have a fabulous time! I’m looking forward to seeing if your diving pictures are better than mine as my photography skills weren’t great at all!
